St Martin by the Green

In many ways, St Martin's is green. It's the little rural church, sitting by the Green and warm with its exposed red brick inside and out.

Somehow, it's more in touch with the country than the town. You might find a dog or two waiting patiently outside while owners enjoy a thoughtful service before walking back home. It has a naturally warm and intimate atmosphere welcoming to all ages.

History of the Church

St Martin’s was built in 1904 and was originally known as The Tilford Mission Church. The Church was renamed St Martin-by-The Green at a service of dedication and consecration on 9th June 1957.

The Role of St Martin-by-The Green Church

St Martin’s Church offers an alternative to the services at St Thomas’ and Brambleton as well as providing a focus for the community of the Lower Bourne. The Vicar of The Bourne has responsibility for the care of the St Martin’s congregation.

However, as there is not a clergy with specific responsibility for St Martins, the congregation benefit from the variety of clergy who lead the Holy Communion services.

We have a dedicated Lay Reader, Geraldine Molony, who ministers to the congregation on a weekly basis.

Worship at St Martins

All the services at St Martins are based on Common Worship and involve a high level of lay participation. Although we do not have a choir, we use music as an integral part of our worship.

St Martin’s Church and the Community

The Church provides a focal point for the community of the Lower Bourne with many of the residents being christened, married, and receiving their final farewell from the Church which has been an integral part of their lives.
