The unique English choral tradition is justly envied around the world and St. Thomas-on-The Bourne proudly boasts a thriving musical life that dates back to the mid nineteenth century. The current church was built in 1911 on a new site near to an earlier smaller church and enjoys exceptional acoustics and a fine Nicholson pipe organ. We are the only parish church in the Diocese of Guildford to maintain a choir of Boys and Gentlemen as well as a choir specifically for Girls. The dedication and skill of all the musicians at St. Thomas has built a strong history and ensures a wide reputation for musical excellence. Our four choirs are:
1. St. Thomas-on-The Bourne Parish Choir of Boys and Gentlemen The Parish Choir has existed continuously since the 1860s and consists of Boy Choristers with the Choir Gentlemen. The Parish Choir lead the worship at the 10am Sung Eucharist or 6.30pm Choral Evensong. 2. St. Thomas-on The Bourne Girls’ Choir Since 2004 there has been a girls’ choir who sing with the Gentlemen and also on their own. The Girls’ Choir lead the worship at the 10am Sung Eucharist or 6.30pm Choral Evensong.
3. St. Thomas-on-The Bourne Chamber Choir The Chamber Choir consists of the Choir Gentlemen together with sopranos (and female altos). They sing around ten services each academic year at times when the boy or girl choristers are on holiday or are not available.
4. St. Thomas-on-The Bourne Unevensong Choir Unevensong Choir is a relaxed unauditioned mixed voice adult choir that lead the informal unevensong service on the third Sunday of each month. Unevensong choir rehearses in each other’s homes enjoying eclectic music, mixing social and musical interests.
